The Busy Girl’s Guide to Morning Routines that Fuel Success
Are your mornings setting you up for success or leaving you feeling a step behind? For high-achieving women, starting the day on the right foot can make all the difference. But let’s be honest: when you’re busy, you don’t always have an hour to spare for a complex morning routine. That’s why I’ve put together The Busy Girl’s Guide to Morning Routines that Fuel Success—quick, powerful habits designed to help you tackle each day with focus, energy, and purpose.
Over the years, I’d heard countless times that having a morning routine was the key to a successful day. While that sounded great, I struggled to find the “right” routine, and honestly, I wasn’t sure I could stick with it. To my surprise, I discovered that the best morning routine is the one that works for you. It can be as complex or as simple as you need it to be; the only requirement is that it sets you up for success. When you design a routine that aligns with your personality and lifestyle, it becomes something you look forward to rather than a chore.
My personal morning routine is one I rarely deviate from because I created it in a way that works best for me, making it easy to follow consistently. In this guide, I’ll share the essential steps to building a routine that fuels your day, plus a downloadable resource to make it even simpler to start
Why a Morning Routine Matters
Studies show that having a structured morning routine can significantly impact productivity, focus, and overall mental well-being. In fact, a study by Harvard Business Review found that highly successful people—from CEOs to athletes—rely on morning routines to set a strong foundation for the day. When you start your day with intention, you’re better prepared to tackle tasks, make decisions, and manage stress effectively. A few key benefits of a well-designed morning routine include:
- Boosted Productivity & Focus: Starting your day with intentional actions prepares your mind and body to stay focused and productive.
- Positive Mindset & Energy: A morning routine sets a positive tone, helping you manage stress and stay energized.
- Alignment with Goals: By aligning your morning with purposeful actions, you create momentum that carries through your day and aligns with your bigger vision.
Essential Elements of a Busy Girl Morning Routine
A successful morning routine doesn’t have to be complicated. These essential steps will set you up for a productive day, whether you have 10 minutes or 30.
1. Prepare the Night Before
- A great morning starts with a little prep the night before. Take 5-10 minutes to:
- Lay out your outfit to avoid decision fatigue.
- Write down tomorrow’s top priorities so you wake up with clarity.
- Set up breakfast or prep a quick snack to grab and go.
2. Mindset Boost: 5 Minutes of Positivity
- Start your day with a simple mindset practice to stay grounded:
- Gratitude Journal: Write down three things you’re grateful for. Starting with gratitude sets a positive tone and trains your mind to look for the good in each day.
- Daily Affirmation or Declaration: Say or write a positive statement, like “I am capable of handling today’s challenges with grace,” or use daily declarations that empower you.
- Intentions & Reflection: Set an intention for the day, such as “Today, I will approach tasks with focus and calm.” This clarity can be transformative.
- Tip: I include my gratitude entries, affirmations, and daily declarations in my “Code Time” every morning. This practice centers me and keeps my mindset strong and focused.
3. Move and Hydrate
- Re-energize your body first thing in the morning:
- Drink Water: Start with a glass of water to refresh and rehydrate after sleep.
- Stretch or Walk: Spend 5-10 minutes stretching or taking a brief walk to wake up your muscles and get your blood flowing.
4. Prioritize with Purpose
- Use a few minutes to set clear priorities for the day:
- Top 3 Priorities: Identify the three main things you want to accomplish today. Focusing on fewer but high-impact tasks helps you stay productive.
- Visualize Success: Spend a moment visualizing a successful day, focusing on how you want to feel as you complete each task.
Journaling can be a powerful addition to your morning routine. Use this time to jot down any thoughts, goals, or reflections to set the stage for a productive day.

Sample Morning Routine Examples
Here’s how you can structure your morning routine based on how much time you have, I’ll include two options:
Thrifty Thirty-Five (35 Minutes or Less)
For those mornings when you’re pressed for time but still want to start with purpose and clarity, the Thrifty Thirty-Five framework offers a simple, powerful way to ground yourself for the day ahead.
Silence (5 minutes)
- Begin your morning with a few minutes of quiet stillness, a time to embrace silence and connect within. Use this time to meditate, allowing your mind to calm and your thoughts to settle. Meditation in stillness can set a peaceful, focused tone for the day and create space for clarity and calm.
Script (10 minutes)
- Spend 10 minutes scripting out your day or your goals. This can include journaling your intentions, writing affirmations, or planning your top 3 priorities. Use this time to clarify your vision and align with your goals. The act of scripting brings focus and direction, setting you up for a productive and intentional day.
Say (10 minutes)
- Use this time for prayer, affirmations, or declarations. Speaking words of gratitude, affirmations, or asking for guidance through prayer can reinforce a sense of purpose and connection. Examples could include, “I am capable and focused,” “Today, I am open to new opportunities,” or a short prayer asking for wisdom and strength for the day ahead.
Sway (10 minutes)
- Move your body gently for 10 minutes to “sway” into the day. This could be light stretching, a slow dance, or a brief yoga flow. Swaying helps awaken your muscles, increase blood flow, and bring energy to your morning in a calm, intentional way.
First Forty-Five (45 Minutes for a Full Start)
For those mornings when you have a bit more time, the First Forty-Five routine allows you to dive deeper into setting your day up for success. This routine combines mindfulness, intention, planning, and practical action, ensuring you start with purpose and direction.
Stillness (5 minutes)
- Begin with 5 minutes of quiet stillness, meditation, or reflection. Use this time to center yourself, embrace calm, and let your mind settle. This moment of stillness can reveal insights, clarify your intentions, and prepare you to approach the day with a peaceful mindset.
Script (10 minutes)
- Spend 10 minutes scripting out your day in a journal. This could include writing down goals, reflecting on what you’re grateful for, and setting intentions. Use this journaling time to focus on what truly matters and what you want to achieve, grounding yourself in your vision for the day.
Say (10 minutes)
- Take this time to speak words of affirmation, engage in prayer, or declare positive intentions. Speaking affirmations or saying a short prayer helps reinforce confidence and purpose. Examples might be, “I am capable of handling whatever comes my way today,” or “Today, I am grateful for the opportunities before me.” Use this as a space for gratitude, connection, and strength.
Study (10 minutes)
- Dedicate 10 minutes to a quick Bible study session with the Busy Girl’s Guide to Bible Study. Read a short passage, reflect, and find a key takeaway that resonates with you. This spiritual time helps to center your faith and adds depth and perspective to your day, providing encouragement and wisdom.
Shift (10 minutes)
- Use the final 10 minutes to shift into action mode. Go over your day’s schedule and remove any tasks or commitments that, in your stillness, you realized are unnecessary. Eliminate, delegate, or reschedule to create an optimized, focused plan. This is also the time to get practical: set up your calendar, ensure any last-minute calls or errands are scheduled, and prepare for the day’s needs (like setting dinner in the crock pot or getting ready for the gym). This step bridges your morning preparation into the rest of your day, setting you up for success.
The First Forty-Five routine gives you a deeper, more structured morning framework that combines mindfulness, intention, and practical preparation. It helps you start with clarity, purpose, and a plan for success, making it the perfect routine for those who can dedicate a little more time to their mornings.
Quick Routine (10 Minutes or Less)
- Hydrate: Start with a glass of water.
- Stretch: Do a quick full-body stretch or a few yoga poses.
- Affirm & Focus: Say a positive affirmation and set a main intention for the day.
